Retiring? I think I'd describe you as Quietly Important, as well as a generous and humane teacher;

I'm glad to have had the chance to be supervised by you.

all the best for the next chapter,

It was such a pleasure  today to find Lawrence in my first breakout group ever.  It reminded me of the sense I had of coming to Birkbeck in the late 1990s and finding a thoughtful environment unlike I had ever experienced before.  I hope your retirement is full of delight.   Barbara Collins

I never had the opportunity to experience you as tutor but in your teaching (2014-2017) and mindful of the arc of your position and experience of running the course and care, your affect on my learning and others goes far and wide. Thank you Laurence

Laurence, I've known you for many years - first as my tutor and now, for a longer time, as a colleague on the BCA scrutiny committee. I often think gratefully about what my Birkbeck training has given me - both in general and in your own particular contribution to my learning and development. Thank you, and I look forward to continuing to work with you.

I was a student on the Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy course from 2012 to 2015. I am so grateful to you Laurence for making complex concepts understandable – I go back to your books time and again. I thank you too for being approachable, always willing to help or advise, and for the encouragement you gave us all.

Good luck and keep on writing!

When I had to take time out of the counselling programme and became tutored by you, I was left feeling blessed and well guided. I was truly grateful for the care, thought and advice that was offered.

Also many thanks for your books and the sound ideas expressed in very user friendly language and manner. I continue to cherish the wisdom and understanding contained within.

I wish you good, indulgent and enjoyable days of retirement.

Laurie (as you used to like to be called!), you were my tutor in my final year at Birkbeck in 2011 and I felt very lucky to have you. You were always a calm and respectful presence, you never made me feel inadequate, and you helped boost my confidence in myself. And, my oh my, your insights into my clients was incredible, as though you had been in the room with me! When I contacted you a couple of years later at Homerton, you welcomed me into your supervision group with open arms and once again, I learned an incredible amount. All the best for your retirement and your release from that awful admin that you probably hated!

I qualified in 2001 - when you interviewed me I was convinced that you didn't like me ( yes I know now that this was about my inner world not you). On my first day I arrived to be greeted by such a warm smile, you remembered my name and my feeling of being held by you continued for the next three years. Your knowledge and experience was immense but you never presented yourself as better than us. You held and nurtured us carefully and thoughtfully and that welcoming smile has stayed with me ever since. Thank you Laurie for putting me on the path that has led me to my current role. The impact of your teaching is with me still - a great foundation for my practice and my teaching.

I always remember your containing and thoughtful presence during my time at Birkbeck, a turbulent and interesting time in my personal development! I also really enjoyed my brief time with you in supervision more recently.
I wish you a fantastic retirement after your many years of service in education and the consulting room. I will continue to return to your books again and again for grounding and encouragement. Thank you Laurence.

Thank you for being such and insightful mentor and tutor and for your guidance in my final year as a student completing the MSc 2011.  I have read your follow up book The Psychoanalytic Craft and 'the idealisation of not-knowing' particularly stood out for me and 'Countertransference and containment revisited' which lead me on to even further reading. I wish you a restful retirement and am truly grateful to you for your teaching, encouragement and wisdom.

With Warm Wishes

I graduated from Birkbeck in 2018 and you were my case study tutor in my final year.  My third year was by far the most challenging for me but with you at the helm, my case study group was a relatively(!) safe haven.  My memory of that time is that you used your extensive experience and skill so sensitively and supportively, fostering our curiosity at every level.  I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with you and only wish I'd had more.

I wish you all the very best in this new chapter of your life and hope very much to bump into you again along the way.
